Agave Variegated
Agave americana 'Marginata'Variegated agave is a striking succulent valued for its dramatic foliage and architectural form. Its thick, sword-shaped leaves form a symmetrical rosette marked by bold stripes of green and creamy yellow or white, creating strong visual contrast in the landscape. The rigid leaves are often edged with small spines and tipped with a sharp terminal point, adding texture and structure year-round.
Perfect for drought-tolerant gardens, rock gardens, and contemporary landscapes, variegated agave thrives in sunny, dry conditions with minimal maintenance. It performs exceptionally well as a specimen plant or in containers where its unique coloration can be fully appreciated. Like many agaves, it flowers once at maturity, sending up a tall flowering stalk before the main plant declines. However, offsets commonly develop at the base, allowing the plant to continue through its pups.
Care Instructions
Planting
Plant in full sun with plenty of space, keeping it away from walkways due to sharp leaf tips.
Watering
Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Highly drought tolerant once established.
Pruning
Remove damaged or aging leaves at the base using protective gloves and tools.
Pest Control
Generally pest resistant; monitor for agave snout weevil and treat promptly if detected.
Soil Tips
Requires very well-draining soil; sandy or gravelly soil helps prevent root rot and promotes healthy growth.
