Malus Domestica 'Anna'

The ‘Anna’ Apple Tree (Malus domestica ‘Anna’) is a remarkable low-chill variety bred specifically for warm climates, making it ideal for Southern gardeners. Requiring only 200–300 chill hours, ‘Anna’ produces a heavy crop of medium to large apples with a crisp texture and sweet-tart flavor, similar to the popular ‘Granny Smith’ but with an earlier harvest window.

Developed in Palestine, this semi-dwarf or standard tree grows 15–20 feet tall and begins fruiting in as little as 2–3 years. The apples ripen in early summer—much earlier than traditional apple varieties—and are excellent for fresh eating, baking, or making applesauce. ‘Anna’ is partially self-pollinating but yields significantly more fruit when paired with a compatible variety like ‘Dorsett Golden’ or ‘Ein Shemer’.

With attractive pink-tinged blossoms in spring and fast growth, ‘Anna’ offers both ornamental charm and reliable production in climates where traditional apples struggle. It’s a top pick for home orchards in USDA Zones 5–9, especially in the southern U.S., where chill hours are limited.

Care Instructions

Planting:
Plant in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil. Space trees 15–20 feet apart. Best planted in late winter or early spring.

Watering:
Water deeply once a week; more often during hot, dry periods. Keep soil moist, especially during fruit development.

Pruning:
Prune in late winter to shape tree, remove crossing or damaged limbs, and promote air circulation. Thin fruits in early summer.

Pest Control:
Watch for codling moths, aphids, and apple scab. Use organic sprays and beneficial insects. Keep area clean of fallen fruit.

Soil Tips:
Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Amend with compost and mulch regularly to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
