Blackberry Freedom
Prime-Ark® Freedom Rubus hybrid 'APF-153T' PP26990Blackberry ‘Freedom’ is a game-changing thornless blackberry that offers the rare benefit of primocane fruiting—meaning it produces berries on first-year canes. Developed by the University of Arkansas, this vigorous, upright plant yields large, flavorful berries starting in midsummer and can offer a second, lighter harvest in the fall in warmer regions.
Perfect for home gardeners, ‘Freedom’ lives up to its name by offering freedom from thorns, freedom from complicated pruning, and freedom to harvest earlier than traditional varieties. Its erect growth habit allows for easier maintenance and less need for support structures, while the juicy berries are ideal for fresh eating, desserts, or freezing. This variety is also disease-resistant, making it a low-maintenance yet productive choice for edible landscapes.
Care Instructions:
Planting:
Plant in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct light. Space plants 3–4 feet apart. Spring or fall planting is ideal.
Watering:
Water regularly, especially during establishment and fruiting. Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy.
Pruning:
Cut spent floricanes after fruiting. In late winter, trim primocanes to encourage bushier growth and improve fruit yield.
Pest Control:
Monitor for aphids, cane borers, and mites. Use insecticidal soap or organic treatments as needed.
Soil Tips:
Prefers fertile, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0–6.5. Add compost or aged manure to enrich poor soils.
