Tifblue Blueberry
Vaccinium Virgatum 'Tifblue'The Blueberry ‘Tifblue’ (Vaccinium ashei ‘Tifblue’) is one of the most popular rabbiteye blueberry varieties, especially favored in the southeastern United States. Known for its vigorous growth, heat tolerance, and heavy yields, ‘Tifblue’ produces medium to large berries with a tart flavor that sweetens as they ripen. This deciduous shrub matures at around 6 to 10 feet tall and wide, making it an excellent choice for edible landscapes or berry patches.
‘Tifblue’ blooms late in the season, helping to avoid damage from unexpected spring frosts, and ripens in mid-to-late summer. The berries are firm and excellent for fresh eating, baking, or preserving. This variety is not self-pollinating and performs best when planted near another rabbiteye cultivar such as ‘Brightwell’ or ‘Premier’ to ensure proper cross-pollination and higher fruit set.
Beyond its productivity, ‘Tifblue’ also brings ornamental value with its bell-shaped spring flowers and striking red to orange fall foliage. Its adaptability, productivity, and reliability make it a top choice for both new and experienced gardeners.
Care Instructions
Planting:
Plant in full sun with well-draining, acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5). Space 5–6 feet apart. Fall or early spring is ideal for planting.
Watering:
Keep soil evenly moist, especially during fruiting. Water deeply 1–2 times per week; avoid waterlogging.
Pruning:
Prune in late winter to remove dead wood and shape the plant. Annual thinning encourages air circulation and better yields.
Pest Control:
Watch for birds, aphids, and blueberry maggots. Use netting for birds and organic insecticidal soap for pests if needed.
Soil Tips:
Amend soil with peat moss or pine bark to maintain acidity. Mulch with pine needles or bark to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
