Fig 'Celeste'
Ficus carica 'Celestial'The Fig ‘Celeste’ (Ficus carica ‘Celeste’) is a beloved heirloom variety known for its cold hardiness, compact growth, and exceptionally sweet fruit. Often called the “Sugar Fig,” ‘Celeste’ produces small to medium pear-shaped figs with smooth, light brown to purplish skin and rich, strawberry-pink flesh. These delicious figs ripen in early to mid-summer and are perfect for fresh eating, drying, or preserving.
This variety is ideal for USDA Zones 7–10 and can tolerate brief freezes better than many other fig trees. It is self-pollinating and begins producing fruit within just a couple of years of planting. The tree typically grows to 6–10 feet tall, making it a great option for small spaces, edible landscapes, or container growing. Its attractive lobed leaves also add ornamental beauty to gardens and patios.
‘Celeste’ is an easy-care variety for both new and experienced gardeners. With minimal pruning and no need for a pollinator, it offers a generous harvest with very little fuss. It’s also known for producing closed-eye fruit, reducing the risk of insect entry and fruit spoilage.
Care Instructions
Planting:
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Space 8–10 feet apart, or grow in a large container for patio use or colder zones.

Water deeply once a week, more during dry spells or while fruit is developing. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
Pruning:
Prune in late winter to shape and remove dead or weak branches. Maintain an open center for better airflow and sunlight.
Pest Control:
Figs are generally pest-resistant. Watch for scale, aphids, and birds. Use neem oil or netting as needed.
