Sago Palm
Cycas revolutaSago Palm (Cycas revoluta) is a striking ornamental plant valued for its bold texture and timeless, tropical appearance. Although commonly called a palm, it is actually a cycad—an ancient plant species that has existed for millions of years. Its stiff, arching fronds form a symmetrical rosette atop a thick, rugged trunk, giving it a dramatic, sculptural look. Typically growing 6–10 feet tall over many years, Sago Palm is ideal as a focal point in landscapes, foundation plantings, or large containers for patios and entryways.
Highly adaptable, Sago Palm thrives in warm climates and performs well both outdoors and indoors when given bright light. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance, making it popular for low-care gardens. The evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, while its slow growth ensures it remains manageable in size. Note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so placement should be considered carefully in homes with pets or children. With its architectural form and resilience, Sago Palm is an excellent choice for adding structure and tropical flair to a wide range of garden styles.
Care Instructions:
Planting: Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and excellent drainage. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as in the container. Suitable for ground planting or containers.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water sparingly, allowing soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering.
Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged fronds at the base as needed. Avoid excessive pruning, as growth is slow.
Pest Control: Monitor for scale insects and mealybugs. Treat infestations promptly with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.
Soil Tips: Prefers sandy, well-draining soil. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained areas. Mulch lightly to retain moisture without trapping excess water.
