Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata) is a versatile, fast-growing ornamental shrub prized for its clusters of soft, sky-blue flowers. Blooming from spring through fall in warm climates, it provides months of vibrant color and pairs beautifully with tropical and Mediterranean-style landscapes. Its loose, spreading growth habit allows it to be used as a flowering hedge, groundcover on slopes, or trained along fences and trellises.

Typically reaching 6–10 feet tall and wide, Plumbago thrives in full sun to partial shade and performs best in frost-free regions. The bright blue flowers attract butterflies and pollinators, adding movement and life to the garden. Once established, Plumbago is relatively drought tolerant and requires minimal maintenance, making it an excellent choice for low-effort, high-impact planting designs.

Care Instructions

Planting:
Choose a sunny location with plenty of space to spread. Plant away from walkways, as stems can arch outward as they grow.

Watering:
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, water moderately and allow soil to dry slightly between watering.

Pruning:
Prune after flowering to control size and encourage bushier growth. It can tolerate hard pruning if needed.

Pest Control:
Generally pest-resistant, but occasionally watch for aphids or whiteflies. Treat early with insecticidal soap if necessary.

Soil Tips:
Plant in well-draining soil amended with organic matter. Plumbago adapts to various soil types but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soil.
