Pomegranate 'Wonderful' produces large, ruby-red fruit with sweet-tart flavor and juicy arils. Hardy, drought-tolerant, and perfect for warm climates.

The Pomegranate ‘Wonderful’ (Punica granatum ‘Wonderful’) is the most popular and widely grown pomegranate variety in the U.S., prized for its large, glossy red fruit and rich, tangy-sweet flavor. Each fruit is packed with vibrant ruby arils that are perfect for fresh eating, juicing, or adding to salads and desserts. The tree itself is as attractive as it is productive, with bright orange-red blossoms in spring that develop into beautiful fall fruit.

Native to the Middle East and Mediterranean regions, the Wonderful Pomegranate thrives in warm, arid to semi-arid climates and adapts well to container growing in cooler regions. It’s hardy in USDA Zones 7–10 and can grow 8–12 feet tall, forming a rounded, dense shrub or small tree. Drought-tolerant once established, this variety is also deer-resistant and low-maintenance, making it a top choice for both ornamental and edible landscapes.

With its ornamental beauty, delicious fruit, and resilience, the Wonderful Pomegranate truly lives up to its name in any garden or orchard.

Care Instructions

Planting:
Plant in full sun for maximum fruiting. Choose well-drained soil and space plants 10–15 feet apart. Works well in containers in cooler climates.

Watering:
Water deeply every 7–10 days during the growing season. Reduce watering after fruit sets and during dormancy.

Pruning:
Prune in late winter to remove suckers and shape the plant. Thin interior branches to improve airflow.

Pest Control:
Generally pest-resistant. Watch for aphids or whiteflies. Use neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

Soil Tips:
Tolerates a variety of soils but prefers loamy, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.5). Mulch to retain moisture and control weeds.
