Prickly Pear is a distinctive cactus valued for its bold form, resilience, and striking seasonal interest. Characterized by flat, paddle-shaped pads and sharp spines, this plant produces bright yellow, orange, or red flowers followed by edible fruit on some varieties. Its architectural shape makes it an excellent feature plant in dry gardens, rockeries, and modern landscapes.

Well suited to hot, arid, and coastal environments, Prickly Pear thrives where many other plants struggle. It is extremely drought-tolerant and requires minimal care once established. This cactus can be grown directly in the ground or in containers, making it versatile for gardens of all sizes. Care Instructions

Planting:
Plant in a full sun position with excellent drainage. Use gloves when handling and allow space for spreading growth.

Watering:
Water sparingly. During establishment, water lightly, then reduce once established. Overwatering can cause rot.

Pruning:
Remove damaged or excess pads using clean tools. Pruning is rarely needed but helps control size and shape.

Pest Control:
Watch for cochineal scale, which appears as white cottony patches. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.

Soil Tips:
Prefers sandy, well-draining soil. Avoid heavy clay soils unless amended with grit or sand to improve drainage.
