Raspberry 'Nantahala'
Rubus IdaeusThe Raspberry ‘Nantahala’ is a high-quality, late-season everbearing variety developed by North Carolina State University. Known for its large, firm berries and rich, sweet flavor, this raspberry plant extends the harvest season into late summer and early fall—perfect for gardeners who want fresh fruit well beyond the typical raspberry season.
‘Nantahala’ grows as a vigorous, upright plant and performs well in cooler climates, with excellent cold hardiness suited to USDA Zones 5–7. The berries are conical, deep red, and ideal for fresh eating, freezing, baking, and jam-making. As an everbearing type, it produces fruit on both current-year and previous-year canes, allowing for two harvests per year if managed properly.
Its name comes from the Nantahala River Valley in western North Carolina, reflecting its roots in the Appalachian region and its ability to thrive in similar climates. This variety is perfect for home gardeners seeking a dependable, flavorful raspberry with an extended yield window.
Care Instructions
Planting:
Choose a sunny site with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space canes 2–3 feet apart in rows. Add compost before planting.
Watering:
Water 1–2 times per week, especially during flowering and fruiting. Maintain consistently moist (but not soggy) soil.
Pruning:
For everbearing harvest, prune spent canes after fall fruiting. To harvest once in summer, mow all canes to the ground in late winter.
Pest Control:
Watch for spider mites, aphids, and cane borers. Use insecticidal soap and encourage beneficial insects. Keep rows weed-free.
Soil Tips:
Prefers slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.5), well-drained loamy soil. Mulch with straw or wood chips to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
