Serviceberry
Amelanchier spp.Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.) is a multi-seasonal ornamental tree or shrub admired for its delicate beauty and ecological value. In spring, it produces clusters of fragrant white flowers that brighten landscapes and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. By early summer, these blossoms give way to small, edible berries that are enjoyed by both humans and birds, making serviceberry an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. In autumn, the foliage transforms into stunning shades of red, orange, and yellow, providing dramatic seasonal color. Its graceful branching structure and moderate size—typically 15–25 feet tall—make it ideal for small to medium gardens, hedgerows, or naturalized plantings.
Serviceberry is adaptable to a variety of garden settings and soil types, thriving in full sun to partial shade. Its low-maintenance nature and tolerance to different conditions make it an accessible option for gardeners of all experience levels. With a combination of fragrant flowers, edible berries, and brilliant fall color, serviceberry provides year-round appeal and wildlife support, making it a highly versatile addition to ornamental landscapes and backyard habitats.
Care Instructions:
Planting: Select a sunny to partially shaded location with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as the container. Space multiple plants 10–15 feet apart.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, serviceberry tolerates short dry periods but benefits from deep watering in prolonged drought.
Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Light shaping may be done after flowering.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, leaf spot, or powdery mildew. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or fungicide as needed.
Soil Tips: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral, well-draining soil. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature.
