Spiderwort (Tradescantia) is a dependable perennial valued for its vivid three-petaled flowers and graceful, grass-like foliage. Blooming from late spring into early summer, the flowers open in the morning and close by afternoon, offering a fresh display each day. Shades of blue, purple, pink, and white brighten garden beds while attracting bees and other pollinators. The arching foliage adds texture even when the plant is not in bloom.

Care Instructions

Planting:
Plant Spiderwort in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. Space plants 18–24 inches apart to allow for spreading and airflow.

Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, Spiderwort tolerates short dry periods but performs best with moderate moisture.

Pruning:
Cut plants back by one-third after the main bloom to encourage fresh foliage and possible rebloom. Remove spent flower stems as needed.

Pest Control:
Spiderwort is generally pest-free. Slugs may occasionally be present in damp areas but rarely cause serious damage.

Soil Tips:
Prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to clay, loam, or sandy soils. Adding compost improves soil health and supports vigorous growth. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
